The symbolism in this painting repeatedly relates to the concept of purification and transformation. A sin-eater is someone who eats at the funeral to take away the sins of the deceased; salt is used for cleansing and purification, and is also used to throw in the eyes of the devil; and red wine symbolises renewal. The dead thrush represents loss of innocence, suggesting the transition into womanhood and relating to the theme of transformation of the self, which is common in my current series of work.
