Entry Description:

This "Forum" is designed for events hosted by a public policy institute. As manifestation of the organization's "no-taking-corners"mission statement, the venue is endowed with a round floor plan - virtually unprecedented for assembly spaces. Though the circle is an apt political metaphor for the institute's philosophy, this geometry presents the acoustical challenge of countervailing sound waves focusing to the room's center - an untenable acoustical condition. The design team's resolution was development of a system of sinuous sculptural wood fins delineating the room's perimeter. These elements successfully diffuse sound waves away from the center, while architecturally expressing the project's acoustical nature.
